Metal Roof Vs Tile Roof Cost

Last updated October 14, 2026 · Method · Corrections
Enter measured dimensions to calculate roofing quantities.
Steel with a tile-like shape is still a different material. Match the same roof sections in both quotes. Keep removal, new layers and deck work clear. A tile-reuse job differs from a new tile roof. The exact assembly governs fit and counts. Leave unpriced work beside each subtotal rather than declare a winner from overlapping guide rates.

Metal roof vs tile roof cost needs a named metal profile and clay or concrete tile. Western States' January 2026 guide gives steel panel ranges. HomeGuide's tile bands have an older date. Those guides do not show which full quote will be lower for your roof. Match measured surface and work scope before comparing totals.

Metal roof vs tile roof cost: identify both systems
Metal can mean corrugated panels, standing seam or modular shingle-like units. Tile can mean clay or concrete. Western States' exact product documents and the TRI clay-and-concrete manual describe other assemblies. A material name alone does not show the quote.
This is a published-data and scope price comparison, not hands-on testing or a product ranking. The roofing materials guide keeps categories as budget inputs. No field inspection or roof-load approval is claimed here.
Metal roof vs tile roof cost: dated ranges
| System | USD / roof-surface ft² installed | Published basis |
|---|---|---|
| Corrugated steel | $7 to $12 | Western States, January 11, 2026 |
| Standing-seam steel | $10 to $16 | Western States, January 11, 2026 |
| Concrete tile | $7 to $19 | HomeGuide, April 5, 2023 |
| Clay tile | $8 to $25 | HomeGuide, April 5, 2023 |

Sources: Western States' guide and HomeGuide's tile table, checked October 14, 2026. The older tile date remains explicit. A fresh check does not create a new survey or inflation-adjusted figure.
These rows include covering and installation on their stated basis. Universal removal, disposal, deck repairs and structural work are not shown. Do not add labor again. The ranges are not two complete bids for one roof and should not be averaged into a generic metal-versus-tile rate.
Compare the same surface and roof sections
Use net sloped surface in both alternatives. The roofing calculator separates that basis from footprint. Indoor floor area can omit overhangs or include several stories beneath one roof. It is not a reliable covering count.
The main house, porch and garage should appear consistently in both quotes. A lower porch can need another assembly. Keep its material and area distinct even when the property has one total roof figure. A single averaged rate can hide a missing or differently covered section.
Material purchasing and installed area
Metal panel counts depend on net width and exact layout. The panel calculator covers simple rectangular single-length runs, with each plane rounded separately. It is not an exact hip or valley cut list.
Tile coverage follows the exact product's exposure and layout. Gross tile size cannot show laid area. Hip, ridge and edge units also have distinct counts. Do not apply one material's waste allowance to the other as though net surface changed.
Both supply and labor cost references use roof surface. Keep ordered coverage and its cuts outside that area basis unless the actual quote says otherwise. A purchase takeoff and an installed budget are related records. But their units and allowances must stay visible.
Deck and structural conditions
The existing base and chosen system need actual check. Material and area do not prove load capacity. The calculator cannot approve the structure. A tile quote can have project-exact structural work.
But this guide does not assume that every home needs it or assign a fixed reinforcement charge.
Roof decking replacement cost concerns checked sheathing. Framing alterations beneath it are another scope. Keep both as conditional where not yet shown. Do not force them into a guessed percent of either metal or tile installation cost.
If one quote includes those tasks and another leaves them outside, the headline gap is not solely a covering price gap. List the work before comparing totals. A larger known scope can be more complete without proving better material result.
Slope and junction requirements
Metal limits depend on the exact seam or profile. Read minimum pitch for metal instead of using a shared standing-seam label. Tile needs its exact assembly records and applicable project basis. The pitch calculator converts units without approving a covering.
Walls, valleys and openings need stated details in both quotes. A new field covering does not by default renew every flashing or transition. Keep those lines included, distinct or unknown. A lower area rate can leave applicable detail work unknown.
New tile versus reusable tile
An existing tile roof can be checked for lifting and relaying usable units while underlying work is renewed. That differs from installing new tile. Tile underlayment replacement cost keeps handling and replacement-unit rules distinct.
Do not compare a metal full replacement against a base-layer-only material line. Do not subtract an invented tile share from a new-tile band to price reuse. Use the actual complete lift-and-relay scope with any conditional tile and deck work.
Removal and waste handling
The old covering can be metal, tile or another material regardless of the new choice. Both quotes should use the same stated removal scope. Roof tear off cost separates material-specific removal references from unknown disposal and later work.
Check whether loading, haul-off and fees are already included. Add each excluded known task once. A container quote can overlap a waste line in the base package. Keep unknown amounts visible instead of adding standard fees to make the two totals look complete.
Warranties, upkeep and future value
Read exact product and workmanship terms for each option. Metal coating terms differ from whole-system terms. Tile covering and underlying layers can have different condition histories. Neither a broad warranty headline nor a supply price shows a guaranteed replacement date.
No resale proceeds, energy savings or lifetime-cost offset is forecast here. Those values are not supplied by the cited installation bands. The price comparison should keep known upfront work distinct from any future model with its own record. A larger initial total is not by default recovered later.
Sources and the next estimate
Sources were checked October 14, 2026. Western States sells panels and names its installation range as guidance. HomeGuide publishes consumer cost data with contractor referrals. The method page keeps their dates and scope limits.
For detail, use metal roof cost, clay tile cost or concrete tile cost. Enter a matching dated project package in the replacement estimator when the exact system and work are known.
Frequently asked questions
Which costs more, metal or tile?
The broad ranges overlap and describe several systems, so they cannot settle two exact project bids. Name the metal profile and tile material, use the same measured surface and match removal and detail scope. Actual complete quotes show the upfront gap. No shared winner or material multiplier is assigned here.
Is a metal tile profile the same as clay tile?
No. A tile-like appearance can belong to steel or another metal system. Clay and concrete are distinct materials with their own records and installed references. Keep the actual product and attachment named.
Appearance should not select the rate, product coverage, minimum slope or structural assumptions used in the budget.
Does tile always require extra structural work?
The actual roof and chosen system need their project basis. This guide does not assume shared reinforcement or approve the base from area alone. Sheathing and framing work are different tasks. Keep any checked alterations separately stated and priced, instead of adding a guessed structural percent to every tile supply and labor subtotal.
Can old tile reuse change the comparison?
Yes, it changes the work scope. A lift-and-relay package keeps checked usable units and includes underlying work and handling. It differs from supplying new tile. Compare complete quotes, with replacement-unit and deck rules visible.
Do not price reuse by subtracting an invented covering share from a new-roof band.
